According to devotional tradition, this is the sacred lake where the Gopis of Vrindavan reunited with Lord Krishna for the final Maha Raas. Overwhelmed with love, the Gopis merged into the holy soil of the lake, turning the earth into fragrant, soft yellow clay known worldwide as Gopi Chandan. Pilgrims collect this sacred cooling chandan to apply auspicious tilaks on their foreheads.
