Bet Dwarka (also known as Shankhodhar Island) is a sacred island located 30 kilometers north of Dwarka off the coast of Okha. According to ancient texts, Bet Dwarka was the actual royal residential island of Lord Krishna and his queens, as well as the historic meeting place where his childhood friend Sudama presented him with a humble gift of puffed rice (Tandul). Rich in mythology, marine biodiversity, and archaeological significance, Bet Dwarka is an essential pilgrimage stop.
Reaching Bet Dwarka has been transformed with the opening of Sudarshan Setu—India’s longest cable-stayed bridge connecting Okha port directly to the island. Spanning 2.32 kilometers with dedicated pedestrian walkways featuring solar panel canopies and Bhagavad Gita verses inscribed along the pillars, the bridge provides seamless road connectivity, complementing the traditional wooden ferry boat ride from Okha Jetty.
The central spiritual attraction on the island is the 500-year-old Shri Krishna Temple at Bet Dwarka, constructed by Vallabhacharya. The sanctum houses the revered idol said to have been crafted by Queen Rukmini. Pilgrims also visit adjacent shrines dedicated to Radha, Rukmini, Satyabhama, and Jambavati, and donate rice at the temple in memory of Sudama's devotion.
Beyond pilgrimage, the eastern tip of the island features Dunny Point, a secluded eco-tourism coastal beach surrounded by coral reefs, mangrove patches, and shallow waters where visitors can spot sea turtles, starfishes, and migratory seabirds during low tide.
